SZALT CLASSES are unique in that each teacher has an authentic and holistic approach to accessing contemporary forms. Artistic Director, Stephanie Zaletel, fosters an environment where company members can utilize classes to investigate their own fascinations while sharing a core set of somatic values and a unified approach to teaching. All classes activate breath, target core muscle groups through fitness inspired tasks, and incorporate meditation and improvisation as a means to re-approach familiar form. Classes vary in difficulty level, though we encourage all levels of mover to join. We believe in mingling professional, pre-professional, new movers of all backgrounds to meet their bodies through dance.

Dance Church® is an all-abilities movement class that offers a fun and inclusive approach to dancing. Designed for people of all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and identities, Dance Church® is a communal space for people who want to move their bodies. The teacher leads this 90-minute class in a series of movement cues, accompanied by a curated playlist of multi-genre pop music. The format is open but guided throughout. Dance Church® was created by Kate Wallich in 2010. Classes are hosted regularly in Seattle, Portland and New York, and have popped up in cities worldwide. All levels, abilities, body types, identities and genders. No previous training is required, but open-mindedness is a prerequisite. Wear clothes you can sweat in. Most people go barefoot or wear socks.

Get lost dancing and sweat (a lot) together—it’s the dance party you wish you had last night.

Dance Church®  has grown explosively since 2015, reaching over 300 people a week. Through partnerships with organizations Velocity Dance Center, StepsPDX, Gibney, Century Ballroom, BodyVox, On the Boards, Washington Hall, Abbey Arts, Rain City Rock Camp for Girls, Friends of the Waterfront and the Henry Art Gallery, Dance Church® has reached over 1,800 new students since January 2017 and has provided discounted class for working dancers.

Stephanie creates such a safe space for people of all levels to come into and dig deep. I would recommend this work to other dancers and non-dancers who are interested in self exploration, deep research, sensationally fantastic movement, and a really warm place to dance with others.

WINTER WONDER WORKSHOP 2020

WWW 2020 will be held in late January in Los Angeles, CA. Applications will become available in November 2019.

This past week I have shifted into a new sense of self-and this workshop was the catalyst. I was brought to tears many times throughout the workshop from this overwhelming sense of collective consciousness and felt a true ensemble—something I have searched a very long time for.

This workshop was immensely refreshing for its emphasis on research rather than performance. Thank you for curating a diverse environment with plenty of room for all voices. I left feeling eager to create new work with a pointed perspective and wide eyes.
